More Favorite Things for Food Lovers, a Gift Guide

I’ve been doing gift guides since 2007! Okay, actually I did one in 2007 and didn’t do one again until 2011. But I’m working on three years in a row now! I’m a little late this year, but I still have some favorite things to recommend for you in case you have a few names left on your list (or you want to give yourself something a little nice).
If you’re looking for something with some Nashville flair, I wrote up a fairly large Nashville-food-related gift list over at Bites again. Some old favorites and a few new goodies are included this year. So in this space, I’ll write about the not-so-local things I love.

TN_cutting_boardThe Totally Bamboo Tennessee cutting board. I have one and I just love it. I’m a native Tennessean (I’ve never lived anywhere else) and proud of it. But all the other states are available as well as other shapes. And they’re not very expensive at all, particularly since they’re very high quality.

A latte frother. I know IKEA has a frother for $2.49, so if you’re near an IKEA, definitely get one (and one for me as well). Otherwise, go for the Aerolatte, which is available at Williams-Sonoma and elsewhere. This Norpro mini mixer set looks nifty, but I don’t know anyone who has one, so I can’t vouch for its quality or usefulness (but the price is nice). Anyhoo, these are great for the latte lover on your list (even if it’s a tea latte) and very useful if you like to put coconut oil in your coffee. If you know someone who likes lattes, get some Carrington Farms extra virgin coconut oil and a frother and tell them to go for it. Delicious and better than any creamer or milk.

Vegan Cuts subscription box. I’ve gotten several Vegan Cuts boxes and I love them. They’re a great way to discover new products. It was because of Vegan Cuts that I learned that Mini Eats likes roasted seaweed. I never would have thought to buy some for her to try! But we got it and she gobbled it up like crazy. It’s pretty much the only green vegetable she likes, so it was worth every penny I spent on my subscription. They also have a ton of great gifts in their store.

Ultimate PlatinumCookies! Another great subscription is the new Cookie Gift Club from Christie Cookies where you can send the monthly gift of cookies (3, 6 or 12 months in a row). Note that the cookies are the special monthly flavor, so they don’t get the same cookies each month.

Libations. Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur. This stuff is amazing. I still love my St. Germain, but this is a good one to have in the cabinet, too. It’s fantastic mixed with whiskey, soda and a twist of lemon. Or with rum and pineapple juice. It’s also nice on its own.

domainedecantonOther ideas for stocking up the wine cellar and the liquor cabinet: Atsby Vermouth (artisanal vermouth that actually tastes good!), Arnaldo Caprai Grecante Grechetto dei Colli Martani (a delicious white wine from the Umbrian region of Italy), Marchesi de’Frescobaldi Chianti Rufina Nipozzano (a chianti from just outside the classico region) and any of the wines bottled by Masi Agricola (just see their wonderful product guide or ask about them at your local wine store).

Cheese! I discovered some great new cheeses at this year’s Southern Artisan Cheese Festival, including all the cheeses from Goat Lady Dairy and Sweet Grass Dairy (I love the Lil Moo). They’re available locally at The Bloomy Rind, which is a great place to shop for hostess gifts and holiday party treats here in Nashville.

I also love all the vegan, cashew-based cheeses from Door 86 Vegan Cheese. But hurry, you’ve got to place orders for Christmas shipping by Monday, December 9.

spritzerGadgets. I love browsing through all the nifty gadgets over at Quirky. Particularly decorative muffin top shapers and the spritzer you stick right into your lemon. Other great places to look for fun gadgets include Bed, Bath & Beyond, the Container Store, and OXO.

I could also spend hours browsing through Cafepress and Threadless and The Oatmeal’s Sriracha Shop.

For ideas from previous years, here are links to last year’s “Favorite Things,” as well as 2011′s “Favorite Things.” They all stand up pretty well.
